It’s been complained a lot in the Hamachi forum that my guest gamers may access my shared folders that I opens for my Mom. Except the fast that Hamachi charges me dollars and NeoRouter is free, the later provides more features than Hamachi. While testing, I can see they present similar performance when they create P2P connection between 2 computers but NeoRouter is much faster than Hamachi when they switch to the relay mode. This improves the performance a lot in the relay mode. When at my home, it can create P2P connections when I am at my office, the NeoRouter server works as a relay server to redirect the traffic to other computers. NeoRouter uses a different strategy – It allows users to setup their own server and it provides P2P service as well. It’s too slow to use the remote desktop, not even copying files. After Hamachi is acquired by Logmein, it does get better than before, but still redirect the connection from my office to their replay server at Florida. (Really? They should have noted most Home Users.) But I’m not lucky that it’s hardly for me to create P2P from our company using Hamachi, as our company uses a Symmetric NAT ( ) and the network is always busy. This can significantly reduce the traffic though their central relay server and they estimated that 95% users are using this way. Hamachi maintains all user accounts in its central server, which helps the client program to establish P2P connection between Hamachi users. Hamachi and NeoRouter are using different network topologies.

With a little technical background, I can not only easily setup router and install software, but also dig deeper to see how they are working. When doing these jobs, Hamachi works ok while NeoRouter works better. I can also setup a CS game server and invite my friends to play together. My brother in LA can print his photos or articles on my shared printer instead of faxing them. For example, I can use Windows Remote Desktop or VNC to access my parents’ computers at Boston from Toronto and share my photos with them using Windows shared folders. In the virtual network, these computers can see each other just like in a same LAN and you can do a lot of exciting stuff. The virtual network can be consisting of computers physically located in a different places or different networks. It does better jobs than Hamachi and it provides more features that Hamachi does not have.īoth NeoRouter and Hamachi can create a virtual LAN over the Internet for you. After a couple of months testing, I decided to stop Hamachi service and turn to NeoRouter. I failed and I had no choice, since there was no competitor then.įinally, a replacement of Hamachi shows up – NeoRouter ( a very neat solution and it’s free.

I was trying to look for a free VPN solution, as I don’t want to pay for the 20 bucks a month for the service. Then you can do anything you want just like in a normal LAN. They are maintaining a big cluster of servers to help users to create virtual LAN over the Internet. For those who don’t know, Hamachi is a VPN service. I was excited the first time I run it, because it simplifies my steps to create a VPN using OpenVPN and brings me a new concept – zero-config. I’ve been a Logmein Hamachi user for a while. Yes, remote dev work is done mostly with Visual Studio Code Remote SSH (but I wish something similar would exists for Sublime Text). The rest of the word is proxied by Cloudflare Tunnels. The Raspberry PI is attached at my home router (1Gb fiber connectivity), then I can access it like a local server (so even by SSH) from everywhere with Tailscale. I wish my web server were in the corner of my room.I dunno install it on each client rdp vnc.

Id imagine you can do something similar with tailscale. Home media server accessible from outside the LANįor external access have a look at Tailscale.
